Senior Coach, Gregory Markzon

Gregory is one of those people, who can be called a "natural" chess player. Unofficially the term describes that special breed of player that at some point in his/her life, basically breathes, eats, sleeps, and dreams chess. Fortunately for us at the ICA, Gregory is, or at least in his opinion, used to be such a ferocious player. Although it would be in the best interest of parents to keep the following from their kids, it is still something they might find interesting. At one point in his teenage years, Gregory so entranced in the mysterious ways of this ancient of all games, actually skipped school, in order to go to the park and study all sorts of different chess ideas. In his own words "All I needed at that point in my life was a board and some pieces, and I could keep myself busy all day."

Although the days of such young irresponsibility are long behind him, it doesn't mean that those park lessons are lost or forgotten. Gregory retains a whole "fort knox" supply of chess knowledge, and readily shares it with the ICA students.

In my humble opinion Gregory is probably the best trainer at the ICA. Its not just a question of knowing all the different openings, and rook endings, and middle game theories, it's a matter of being able to interest, and hook, the barely existent attention span of kids, and that is exactly what Gregory knows how to do. I cannot remember how many times I walked in one of his lessons and saw the eyes of the children glued to him, as if he was a Looney Tunes cartoon on TV.
