Dr David Ostfeld Memorial Scholastic Championships!
The scholastic championships were once again contested over five sections of various strengths and playing levels at the Bergen Academies this past Sunday November 15th.
Sean Mclaughlin won all four of his games and was the sole first place winner in section one (unrated and restricted to Kindergarten through second grade). Choco Chen and Kenneth Shi drew their last round game against each other and thereby ended up splitting the second and third place trophies.
Thirty kids competed in section one.
Anthony Marin won first place on the strength of victories in each of his four games. Four players tied for 2nd-5th with three points and they were (in tie-break order) Chloe Brawer, Shuban Devavakonda, Berat Yigit, and Shuban’s brother Udbhav Devavakonda.
Seventeen kids competed in section two which is unrated and restricted to players from 2nd-4th grade.
Yael Freydlin, and Ilya Asulin scored four perfect points to tie for first place in section three (restricted to USCF players rated under 800). An astonishing ten players scored three points and tied for third through twelfth place and they were George Stevens, Andrew Sung, Michael Pylypovych, Jonathan Zhou, Jacob Feit, Rylan Contos, Kiran Vitale, Nathan Shurts, Sebastien Meesin, and Ari Reitman.
Thirty-nine players competed in section 3.
Longtime ICA student Connor Cabrera was the sole perfect four scorer closing the show with a sneaky mate in one on his last round opponent Bowen Huang. Naveen Balakrishnan, Alan Kerdman, and CJ Freydlin, all scored three points each and tied for second through fourth places.
Twenty players competed in section four.
Avi Slavin got three-and-a-half points and first place in section five as second place finisher Grant Goldman simplified the position and offered a last round draw. Joining Grant in second place with three points were Eric Zheng, and Michael Druker.
Eighteen players competed in section five.
