More and More ICA Dads (Where are you Moms?)
Playing the Ostfeld Memorial Tournaments! Results and Observations!
Ever since we added the U1600 Open section and opened section five of the Scholastic event to adults we have seen a steady increase of parents (a gender neutral term even though we are only talking Dads, and Grandads, not Moms) taking the plunge and participating in the competition themselves!
This past tournament, counting parents who played in the open section there must have been close to if not ten Dads participating and we couldn’t be happier that this is the case. As with many things in life it is parents who set the best examples for their children, with regard to acting, and competing in general, and by making that decision we feel parents are setting a great example. It also puts them in a better position to sympathize with their kids successes, and mistakes. Furthermore, by having a parent and a child participate in various sections, it allows the family a better opportunity to win the family event and thereby get free entry into the next tournament. For instance, in the past few events the siblings whose father (i.e. the Freydlins, and Devarakondas) participated in the tournament won free entry into the next event despite the fact that the Dad’s result didn’t even contribute to the family total. It just seemed like a good moral boost for the kids.
Out of thirty-three players in section one it was Jacob Volynsky who won all four games and first place. Maanas Chini (whose Dad played section five!) got three and a half points, and tied for second place with Eric Meng. Eric and Maanas drew their third round game against each other.
Mathias Nguyen-Van-Duong won all four games and first place in section two. Udbhav Devarakonda (whose dad also played section five!) won three games and drew one to get second place. Kishan Dhamodaran, Hagop Makhoulian, Sean McLaughlin, and Shuban Devarakonda (again Dad played section five!) all got three points and tied for third place.
Daniel Marbe, and Wesley Taylor tied for first winning all four of their individual games. Rahul Raja got third place with three-and-a-half points.
Forty five players participated in section three.
Mythreya Dharani ended up in first place with three wins and one draw against Ethan Xu, who took second place with three points, because he also drew another game against third place finisher Benjamin Ma. Bowen Huang, and Andrew Salnikov both got three wins as well to tie Benjamin and Ethan in the standings.
Nineteen players competed in section 4.
Section 5 (Dad’s section!)
Michael Druker outplayed the adults and won all four games to finish in first place. Siddharth Manikandan and “ICA dad” Ravi Chinni tied for second place with three points each.
Fifteen “Dads” and “kids” competed in section five.
Take note that Mr. Chinni, on the strength of this, and his son’s result in section one, gets a total of 6.5 points, which puts the Chinni family in good position to win the family competition and gain free entry into the next ICA Ostfeld Memorial scheduled for March 20th.
Thank you to everyone and hope to see all the kids, dads (and Moms if they so wish!) playing on March 20th.
