November 6th Ostfeld Memorial Scholastic Championships; Sagalchik Saga continues!

 

We recently held the Ostfeld Memorial Scholastic championship in Bergen Academies on November 6th. The tournament was contested in five sections of various levels and strengths. In section one the winner Josh Sagalchik continued the tradition started by his father GM Sagalchik.

Section 1

Josh Sagalchik was the winner as well as the only player in the section to win all four games defeating the 3rd and 4th place finishers Alexander Shlionsky, and Ryan Liu in the process. The second place finisher was Samuel Obadiah who got three-and-a-half points after accidentally stalemating his 2nd round opponent Christopher Lau. Daniel Crystal, and Daniel Gologorsky joined Alexander and Ryan as the other players with three points total as all four only lost one of their games.

Twenty two players competed in section one.

Section 2

Ethan Park, a Fort Lee school #4 native, won all four of his games in section two to claim first place. Maanas Chinni also won all four of his games but claimed 2nd place only because of tie-breaks. Anabelle Wong, Kyle Sobczyk, Saketh Maddali, Michael Litvinenko, Leya Rubenchik, Valerie Belkovsky, and Stefan Karpenko all scored three points to tie for third place.

Thirty one kids competed in section two.

Section 3

The big section three winner was Sean Mclaughlin who was the only player in the group to win all four of his games and take first place. Tied for second place were Kiril Rustamov, Vivaan Kohli, and James Dimitrov who all scored three wins and one draw.

Forty-three players competed in section three.

Section 4

Section four had no player score perfectly but Gurdeep Singh, and Dhriti Iyer shared first, and second place honors with three and a half points. Yastika Singh, Sriman Goli, Anshul Sinha, Gabriel Kaim, Rahul Raja, and Atiksh Ramakrishnan all scored two-and-a-half points to tie for third.

Sixteen players competed in section four.

Section 5

Sebastien Meesin and Kovi Pahmer were the highest scorers with three-and-a-half points with Ethan Xu, and Lily Del Pilar taking third place with three points each.

Thirteen players competed in section five.
